FAQ

What is TEDxUF?

TEDxUF is an independently organized event from TED, a nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED videos, live speakers, and performances combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Why do I have to apply for the Main Event?

We wish to deliver a more intimate and personalized TEDx experience for our attendees. In order to accomplish this, we have transitioned to a smaller venue and therefore we must cap our attendees to fall within the capacity of our new venue. For this reason, we cannot accept all those who wish to attend. We have created an application to be able to choose from a diverse set of applicants who will be engaged in the discussion and excited for the event.

When is the Main Event?

The main event is March 24th, 2018 from 12:00pm to 5:00pm.

Where is the Main Event?

The main event will be held at the Hippodrome Theater in downtown Gainesville, Florida.
Address: 25 SE 2nd Pl, Gainesville, FL 32601

How much is the Main Event?

If chosen, applicants will be sent a link to the event web page where they can pay $20 for the event. We will also be offering five need-based scholarships to students.

What if I change my mind after I apply, but still want to get involved?

That’s okay! There are plenty of other opportunities for you to tune in and get involved such as the Satellite Venue and volunteering.

What can I expect at the event?

The event goes from 12pm-5pm where we will have 9 great speakers and 4 performances with a break in between during which we have labs and other interactive activities for our attendees.

What is a lab?

Every year at TEDxUF, we invite different organizations from the Gainesville community and the University of Florida to highlight examples of the amazing ideas, projects, and people in our community. These organizations help foster engagement during the event and spread their ideas to our attendees. This year, we're excited to host Virtual Reality for the Social Good, Gatorloop, Self-Narrate, Revolt, and other local organizations at TEDxUF to share their ideas!

Will there be parking for the main event?

Unfortunately, TEDxUF will be unable to provide parking for the Main Event. However, there are plenty of parking locations in downtown Gainesville. For more information be sure to check out: http://gvilleparking.com/locations-rates#garage

What if I don’t get accepted for the event?

We have a satellite venue where we will be live streaming the event so you can get a taste of TEDxUF!

What is the Satellite Venue?

The satellite venue is an opportunity to bring TEDxUF to as many people in Gainesville as we can. Due to the limitation of seating this year, we have opened up an extra event that will occur at the exact same time as TEDxUF which is free of charge and open to anyone! This will be hosted at Bryan Hall and will give student and community members alike an all-day event to watch TEDxUF via a livestream with some activities and refreshments to go along with it. It’s a great way to get the TED feel without spending a dime!

Where is the Satellite Venue?

The satellite venue will be at the University of Florida in Bryan Hall room 150.
Address: 1384 Union Rd, Gainesville, FL 32611
